Information technology pervades everywhere

Old General Store Counter

Some decades ago the counter of a general store might have looked like that.

A shop assistant needed to enter the prices of the products into a cash register and maybe do some sums in her head to give the right change.

Nowadays you need to master numerous information systems for bus and train tickets, events, the pools, and postal and payment services, to name but a few. And usually, they all have different user interfaces and logics.
